GAME RECAP

Benito Santiago hit a grand slam -- his second homer of the game -- to cap a five-run ninth inning as the surging Philadelphia Phillies rallied for a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves and Greg Maddux.

David Justice hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. But the Phillies struck for five runs in the top of the ninth off Maddux (4-2).

Lenny Dykstra began the rally with a leadoff single and moved to third on Mickey Monrandini's single. Mark Whiten's single over first baseman Fred McGriff's glove scored Dykstra to tie the game.

After Todd Zeile popped out, Jim Eisenreich was intentionally walked to load the bases. Santiago then hit the first pitch over the center-field wall for his eighth homer of the season and a 6-2 lead.

Santiago, who hit a solo shot in the fifth inning, collected his third career grand slam and first since September 3rd, 1989, when he was with the San Diego Padres. He matched a career high with five R-B-I.

Santiago has five career home runs against Maddux, who allowed his first grand slam in 308 career games.

"I don't know, he's one of the best pitchers," Santiago said. "I just try to concentrate. Even though I have five home runs off him, I have a lot of respect for him. At that time, I just tried to hit a fly ball to the outfield for an R-B-I. I just wanted to score one run and be ahead in the ninth inning."

Terry Mulholland (3-2) earned the victory, allowing two runs and nine hits over eight innings. After Dave Leiper gave up Ryan Klesko's 11th homer to open the ninth, Ricky Bottalico retired the final two batters for his league-leading 11th save.

"You got to want to pitch and play against guys like that," Mulholland said. "I think that's the way this team is. I earned this one definitely. I mixed it up so much bEtween my fastball, curve and slider. We just tried to not give them any one set pattern. We just tried to keep them guessing. It wasn't any one set pitch."

The setback left Maddux with as many losses as he had all last season, when he went 19-2 and won his fourth straight Cy Young Award. He surrendered six runs and seven hits over 8 1/3 innings and had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Maddux allowed more than three earned runs for just the sixth time in his last 75 starts, dating to the 1993 All-Star break.

"Give him (Santiago) credit, he was aggressive up there, he swung aggressive and I threw him a pitch he could hit," Maddux said. "You have to give him credit for taking advantage."

The Phillies won their third straight game and have won eight of their last nine. Atlanta has dropped two in a row following a four-game winning streak.

"It was a heck of a game, you'd never have thought the score would end up like that," Phillies manager Jim Fregosi said. "Lenny got us started, and what can you say about Benny? That was the first grand slam ever given up by Maddux. Realistically, the pitchers have kept us in games, giving us a chance to win."

Chipper Jones singled in Marquis Grissom in the third inning to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. Santiago's seventh homer of the season in the fifth tied it.
